Historic moment! "Huang Hu" sets sail! Anhui's first 7,000-car LNG dual-fuel ro-ro car ship
On January 21, the maiden voyage of "Huang Gu," Anhui's first LNG dual-fuel 7,000-vehicle capacity ro-ro car carrier, and the Mediterranean route opening ceremony was both held in Haitong Terminal in Shanghai.
Notably, over 140 years ago, China's first self-designed steamship, also named "Huang Gu," in Anqing, Anhui. Carrying the dreams of a century, the new era "Huang Gu" sets sail again, making a global reach. "Huanghu" is the first batch of car ro-ro ships was invest and built by Anhui Provincial Port&Shipping Group CO,.LTD. This vessel was designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute, built by Wuhu Shipyard, and independently operated by Hangrui International Company.
In this project, Seacon Shipping Group participated in shipping construction supervision, provided technical support and crew management.Seacon Shipping Group has formed an experienced professional team to closely collaborate with Wuhu Shipyard, ensuring the ship's delivery.Seacon Shipping Group not only supervised the construction process but also enhance shipping performance and provided environmental technology support.
Currently, Seacon Shipping Group manages over 10 dual-fuel car carriers, making it one of China's leading third-party car carrier management companies.
The "Huang Gu" vessel has a total length of 199.9 meters, a beam of 38 meters, 12 decks (including four adjustable ones), and a capacity of 7,000 standard vehicles. It can transport various types of vehicles, including passenger cars, trucks, construction machinery, and new energy vehicles. The main engine is equipped with WinGD's latest intelligent control iCER (Intelligent Control Exhaust Recycling) system, which reduces methane slip by 50%, sulfur oxide emissions by 99%, particulate matter emissions by 80%, and greenhouse gas emissions by over 28%. It meets the IMO Tier III emission standards, achieving international leading levels in environmental performance and transport efficiency. The dual-fuel technology enables the ship to switch between LNG and conventional fuel, significantly enhancing its adaptability.
Amid the growing opportunities in China's new energy vehicle exports and the urgent need for decarbonization in the shipping industry, the launch and operation of large dual-fuel car carriers are timely and highly relevant. Shipping decarbonization is an irreversible trend, with green and intelligent development being the global shipping industry's direction. Data shows that there are currently over 210 new car carrier orders worldwide, with more than 80% adopting LNG as an alternative fuel. LNG is expected to play a significant role in the green transformation of the car carrier market and the broader shipping industry.
On its maiden voyage, "Huang Gu" carried over 4,300 export vehicles, equivalent to approximately 73,000 cubic meters, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and construction machinery from brands such as Chery, JAC, Yutong, Dongfeng, SANY, XCMG, and Liugong. Departing from Shanghai Port, calling in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Italy, and Spain an route to the Mediterranean.
